Relocation Tips
1. Movers/moving- Interview 3 or 4 moving companies. The more companies you speak with, the more informed you will become about fair market price and what your move entails.
- Tips to movers will not be included in the move estimate. Tipping rule of thumb is as broad as $5-10 per man per hour or 15-20% of the entire job to your moving crew. However, you should not feel obligated or intimidated. Your tip should be based on the quality of their service.
- Consider packing on your own. It will make your move less expensive. Start with what you use the least. (Check on moving insurance coverage for the things you decide to pack on your own.)
- Schedule your move date so you're not left without a bed on your last night. You may want to make back up arrangements in case your closing date is changed.
- Consider selling, donating or clearing out furniture, clothes or books before your move.
- Make arrangements well in advance with furniture purchasers and/or charities to pick up your things. They often require at least three weeks notice.
- Throw out items that you haven't used in the last six months to a year including empty boxes, magazines and food items like old spices.
- Streamlining will prevent you from moving what you'll end up throwing out at your new location - saving you time and money.
- The previous occupant has to cancel service before a new occupant can take over so here's a basic guideline
